Part 4: Your BALANCE Sheet

Review: INTRO, GETTING READY & Parts 1, 2, & 3

In the previous installments, we inventoried your current assets, liabilities, strengths and weaknesses. We also looked at your potential opportunities and threats to your future. Before deciding where to apply those assets and the focus of your creative effort, we need to total the current balances in each account of your life.

This is a crucially important step for two reasons:

Imbalance = Disaster
We often see people who have become successful in one area of life, but are utter disasters in many other areas. Tabloid magazines are full of this kind of drama, with headlines of bitter divorces, drunk-driving arrests, family feuds, racist rants, bulimia, drug rehab, depression and suicide attempts. Many of these same people, the ones many Americans idolize, are some of the most unhappy, insecure and depressed people you will find. Why? Their focus on succeeding in one area of life created a great imbalance with the other areas.

Remember the final words given to me by dad’s wealthy friend the day before he died? Read them (and live by them) HERE.

Be wary of the price the rest of your life has to pay for the success in one area of your life.

Wrong Account

Someone recently shared with me an incredibly poignant distinction, he said before you build your business plan, build your life plan. Figure out what kind of life you want to have first—where you want to live, what type of people you want to be surrounded by, whether you want to work nights and weekends, whether you want to travel (and how much and where), whether you want to be home for dinner every night, if you want a short commute, what type of environment you want to go to each day, how you want to dress, etc.

Your Perfect Goal – Not Too Short-Term, Not Too Long-Term

short term vs. long term 300x205 Your Perfect Goal Not Too Short Term, Not Too Long Term“If you don’t have time to do it right you must have time to do it over”. ~Author Unknown

Last week I had the rare opportunity to meet one of the top three world’s futurologists (as it turns out “futurology” is a profession!). This highly successful man gets paid $20,000 by such corporations as IBM and BMW for making a 45 minute speech on the future of innovations. We started talking and he said a very curious thing, “People are predisposed to think in two categories: short-term and long-term perspective. I get paid a lot of money, not because I am smarter than most of the innovation consultants out there, but because I am one of the few specialists who makes mid-term predictions. ”

This phrase for some reason stuck with me and made me notice something I have never thought of before. In goal-setting all the “experts” advice us to break goals in two categories:  short-term goals and long-term goals. We have all accepted this as a given, because it makes sense to us. And yet how many of us continuously underestimate how much time it will take us to achieve our goals and later feel frustrated about not being able to meet our deadlines?

Maybe the real problem lies in the system itself and not in our inability to plan our actions steps correctly?

Let me explain this…

Short-term goals are generally defined as those that may be achieved in one year or less. While short-term goals are easy and motivating there are a few serious problems:

1.  We often confuse short-term goals as tasks on our to-do lists. As a result we set too many of them and later feel overwhelmed and stressed out.

2. Our short-term goals are often competing with one another. For example, you may want to pay off your credit card debt, save money for a car down payment. But at the same time you dream about a two week vacation in Thailand and you also know that you need to buy your mom a Birthday present. These goals do not seem contradictive, but they all compete for one of your most important resources – money.

3. Short-term goals are fragmental. Anything that is worth achieving requires more than one mini-goal. You will get “nowhere” if you only concentrate on “now” and “here”. In order to accomplish something truly meaningful and be able to track your progress, you have to zoom out and see the bigger picture.

Long-term goals, on the other hand, help us see beyond today’s work and remind us that there is greater purpose for the time we are spending on our goals today. They usually require 5-20 years to achieve. The difficulties most of us have with these goals are obvious:

1. Long-term goals are far away in the future, which makes it hard to stay focused on them and easy to procrastinate.

2. Long-term goals are overwhelming. Long-term goals often are our most meaningful and important goals. But they require sustained effort and continuous motivation over a LONG period of time. Such life-long goals may seem overwhelming for most people. That is why motivational coaches suggest breaking them into smaller “baby” steps. This helps to get going, but to me a list of one million baby steps looks just as intimidating as a long-term goal by itself.

3. It is hard to make realistic deadline estimations. We cannot predict or plan ahead all the events, problems, opportunities that we will face over such a long period of time. Our estimated deadlines for most long-term goals are hopeful guesses at best.

4. Long-term goals require disciplined commitment and ongoing motivation. Disciplined commitment springs from a strong desire. A strong desire begins with a positive attitude and the belief that you can accomplish what you strive for. Unfortunately, it is very hard to keep a positive attitude and a high level of motivation over the course of 5 years.

5.    We tend to be overly optimistic when we set long-term goals. Many say that they plan on retiring early, or tripling their income, or opening their own highly successful company. It is easy to imagine these things 5-20 years from now and hope that somewhere down the road we will figure out a way to get them. However, if you have no clue how to do it now, what is the guarantee that in a few years time you will know it?

We either make specific plans for the near future, because it has almost immediate impact on our life (“spending holidays with our parent”, “asking for a raise”) or dream about something that will happen in 5-20 years (“Retiring to Florida”, “becoming a certified lawyer”, “having two kids”, “living in a big house”, “writing a book”).  What happens in between 1 year and 5 years remain a grey area for most people.

Unfortunately, concentrating solely on short-term and long-term goals is just like walking and looking at the ground under your feet or taking binoculars and admiring the landscape 5 miles ahead of you. If you do not see what is right in front of you, you risk bumping in to a wall.

Mid – term goals combine both: long-term vision and short-term motivation.  I have noticed that a lot of my readers are already intuitively setting one to three-year goals. You may be doing it too. If so, good for you. You are ahead of most innovation experts!

If not, try this approach!

Think of what you would like to achieve in a one – two year period? Make sure that your goal is challenging enough to push you slightly out of your comfort zone, but realistic at the same time, so you will not be setting yourself up for a failure.

Write it down!

Your Deadline is 31st of December, 2010. :)

Part 3: Finding Your Unique Advantage

Review: INTRO, WHY & HOW, PART 1 and PART 2

We’ve examined your life thus far and have looked into your future and established what direction you want your life to take from this point forward. You now know what you stand for (your values); you know the mission you will crusade for (your actions); and you’ve clarified the vision for your life (the outcomes you want to realize).

Before it’s possible to formulate the strategic life plan, you must first take inventory of your assets and liabilities. What are your distinct advantages? Where do you have unique leverage? What weaknesses do you need to shore up and what hazards do you need to avoid? This is where I always start when preparing a plan to perform a turnaround on a company.

Before you can make a plan of where to take the organization, you first have to figure out where it stands—you must know its current assets and liabilities. What are its current weaknesses and where might its most damaging threats come from? You need to be aware of its unique strengths as well as any unseen or underdeveloped opportunities. This is the same assessment necessary to do a turnaround on, or to accelerate, your life. CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING

5 Reasons Why Dreams Don’t Take Flight

by Dr. John C. Maxwell

Most of us never see our dreams come true. Instead of soaring through the clouds, our dreams languish like a broken-down airplane confined to its hangar. Through life, I have come to identify five common reasons why dreams don’t take flight.

No. 1 We Have Been Discouraged from Dreaming by Others
We have to pilot our own dreams; we cannot entrust them to anyone else. People who aren’t following their own dreams resent us pursuing ours. Such people feel inadequate when we succeed, so they try to drag us down.

If we listen to external voices, then we allow our dreams to be hijacked. At some point, other people will place limitations on us by doubting our abilities. When surrounded by the turbulence of criticism, we have to grasp the controls tightly to keep from being knocked off course.

No. 2 We Are Hindered by Past Disappointments and Hurts
In the movie Top Gun, Tom Cruise plays Maverick, a young, talented and cocky aviator who dreams of being the premier pilot in the U.S. Navy. In the film’s opening scenes, Maverick showcases his flying ability, but also displays a knack for pushing the envelope with regards to safety. Midway through the movie, Maverick’s characteristic aggression spells disaster. His plane crashes, killing his best friend and co-pilot.

Although cleared of wrongdoing, the painful memory of the accident haunts Maverick. He quits taking risks and loses his edge. Struggling to regain his poise, he considers giving up on his dream. Although the incident nearly wrecks Maverick’s career, he eventually reaches within to find the strength to return to the sky.

Like Maverick, many of us live with the memory of failure embedded in our psyche. Perhaps a business we started went broke, or we were fired from a position of leadership. Disappointment is the gap that exists between expectation and reality, and all of us have encountered that gap. Failure is a necessary and natural part of life…

Your Achievement Challenge
The words of Paul J. Meyer, the late personal-development trailblazer, continue to motivate others to reach their full potential. “The first step to turning dreams into reality is to write them down—clearly and briefly. Include every adventure, every journey, every challenge, everything you can think of that you would like to do or to become. It does not make any difference how ridiculous a dream sounds. So many times people say, ‘I can’t do that,’ and they never give thought to the possibility of trying. Write down any dream that comes into your mind. Use a whole piece of paper—or an entire notebook if necessary. Then, one by one, month by month, set about accomplishing your dreams!”

Review: INTRO, HOW & WHY and INSTALLMENT NO. 1

This is one of the most important installments of the process. Here, we will delve into some of the great questions of our humåçanity and individual lives: Why are you here? What is your life’s purpose? What difference will you make? How will you be remembered? Who are you? What do you stand for? What values do you represent, protect and fight for? What are you willing to die for and live for?

I know these are heavyweight questions, but they need your answers. If not now, when? How much more of your life will you allow to pass by without you seizing control of it and making it count, exactly as you want it to, consistently and steadfastly? I say now is the perfect time. That is why you have been called to this series; it is why you chose to be here.

These are the great questions of our life. If you will play full out with these questions, you can truly play full out in life.

Don’t leave your life up to chance. Grab the reigns of your life, and charge gallantly in the direction of your grandest vision.”—Darren Hardy

Two years ago, I was asked to deliver the eulogy of a relative. It was an extreme challenge, as this person, unfortunately for them, lived the life of quiet desperation that Henry David Thoreau warned about. She didn’t have many friends (or none that bothered to even come to the funeral), and she wasn’t close to any of her family members, including her own child. I had really nothing to work with, no references to draw from, and no contribution or positive effect her life had on others or the world around her to mention.

The bulk of my eulogy ended up trying to explain (justify, really) her behavior and probably why she lived the way she did. The fact was, there was very little “life” actually lived there. She has now been gone for two years, and the loss is hardly noticeable. I am saddened even thinking about it. I’m not sad for the loss of her, though, but for the life she lost out on.This experience crystallized an important life philosophy for me: Write your eulogy now.

Decide the impact you want to have, the difference you want to make and the way you want to be remembered now, before you get to the end of your life and it’s too late. The end is not the time to figure out how you want your life to be remembered. Many people, including those who are celebrated as being incredibly successful, CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING

How to Achieve Proficiency in Developing Your Home Based Business Opportunity Skill Set?

By Michael D Barrett

It is common knowledge that you need to work at home based business opportunity success the same way that you need to work hard to achieve success – both personal and financial – from the average nine to five job. Unfortunately, if you do not take the necessary steps to set the stage to succeed, it can sometimes get lost in the whirlwind of enthusiasm as the skill sets required to realize the success from the home business and the day job are entirely different. Some might even say that in some cases the skills required are diametrically opposed from one another. To help you work at home based business opportunity success while at the same time give you an insight into the skills that are required to prevent failure, here is a quick list of the four most important proficiencies.

1. You must be a self starter and take the lead. When you work at a home based business opportunity, you are in charge and developing your sill sets and implementing them is the key to your success. You cannot rely on anyone else to tell you to get started, to get to work, to set and meet a deadline, to work through your lunch to accomplish a number of tasks before the end of the day, to work overtime after the kids are in bed to get more done, or to cancel your day off because you need to get a vital aspect of the work done. At a regular job, you will be told by a supervisor when extra hours are available for work, when vacation requests will not be granted, and when a special project requires an “all hands on deck” approach which the company rewards with a catered buffet for everyone who commits to come in on their days off. Not to worry! You are in charge of establishing your days off and when and where to vacation. In making a decision to start your own business, your have made a lifestyle decision to realize your dreams in achieving financial independence.

2. You should not be a team player in the strict sense of the word, but more of a team leader. In a startling reversal of the tired adage that requires everyone in a corporation to be a team member and look out for the good of the company or the department, as a person who is busy with work at a home based business opportunity, your skill sets, if properly exploited and implemented, define you as number one. In some home based business opportunities, such as direct sales, multi level marketing or mlm, you may be encouraged to develop and build a success team with members of your respective organization or company, but it all starts with you taking the initiative. This means you are responsible for everything and Your Way is The Way. The odds are good that nobody will look out for your benefit, and you will need to be mindful of it yourself. In many home based business opportunities, one of the keys to our success is realizing that you are in business for yourself but not by yourself. Great customer service and team support is up to you to deliver, hard lined collection of funds is your department, and dealing efficiently with customer complaints and generating goodwill in the community for your business is your job.

3. Recognize personal shortfalls and correct them immediately. When evaluating and assessing your skill sets you may find that you are not as organized as you should be.  To achieve the level of success that you are striving for, you will soon discover that you need to be your own Cheerleader to get the job done. This may require that you burn the midnight oil and take an online class or course if necessary to find a way to become more organized or internet savvy and then implement it. If you take your success seriously, you will need to invest in your education. Ascertaining and implementing a marketing strategy is one of the most important components that will contribute to your success. ‘You Are a Marketer.’ You need to constantly remind yourself, especially when you are in the start up mode, that your home based business is not a hobby but a business and needs to be treated as such. At a regular job this might translate into a seminar your boss may pay for and send you to, and then will most likely end up in your taking some of the suggestions and adapting them to your work environment. In your home business it means adapting your way of doing business to a correct way of being organized and to educate yourself by attending conferences and live educational events, online seminars and webinars to ensure your ongoing success.

Last but not least, work smart not hard. if you want to be among the 5% of those who succeed, and not the 95% of those who fail, one of the most overlooked skills when you work at home based business opportunity success is your unwavering commitment to success. Throughout the day, and especially in challenging moments, you must constantly utter the affirmation that failure is not an option. This means that you can look past failure, rejection, and mistakes and instead keep trotting forward, always looking toward the ultimate success – even though there will nobody there to cheer you on. You are the ‘Cheer Leader’ as you are at the helm always bearing in mind that among the top priorities, defined by an acquired skill set, requires that you believe in yourself and need to eliminate limiting beliefs and unconscious patterns that can block and sabotage your success. Another helpful affirmation to remember is that success is a choice. At a job, you will have a boss who will encourage you, a concerned coworker who might write you a nice card and put it on your desk, or a friend who will call to encourage you. Not when you are on your own. As the end of everyday, give yourself a hug and remember that the Buck Starts Here. You need to be your own best friend and Cheerleader.

The Law of Reciprocity

By Brian Tracy

People have a deep subconscious need to reciprocate for anything that is done to or for them. The Law of Reciprocity is one of the most powerful of all determinants of human behavior. This is because nobody likes to feel that he or she is obligated to someone else. When someone does something nice for us, we want to repay that person, to reciprocate. We want to be even. Because of this, we seek an opportunity to do something nice in return. This law is the basis of the law of contract, as well as the glue that hold most human relationships together.

Concessions
The first party to make a concession is the party who wants the deal the most. You must therefore avoid being the first one to make a concession, even a small concession. Instead, be friendly and interested, but remain silent. The first person to make a concession will usually be the person who makes additional concessions, even without reciprocal concessions. Most purchasers and sellers are aware of this. They recognize that early concessions are a sign of eagerness and are prepared to take advantage of it. Be careful.

Equal or Greater
Every concession you make in a negotiation should be matched by an equal or greater concession from the other party. If the other party asks for a concession, you may give it, but never without asking for something else in return. If you don’t request a reciprocal concession, the concession that you give will be considered to have no value and will not help as the negotiation proceeds. If a person asks for a better price, suggest that it might be possible but you will have to either decrease the quantity or lengthen the delivery dates. Even if the concession is of no cost or value to you, you must make it appear valuable and important to the other party or it will not help you in the negotiation.

Superstar Selling

Do you want to learn the SECRETS that will transform your sales and give you incredible results? Do you want to be able to work smarter instead of harder to double and TRIPLE your income?

Discover what leaders in the sales industry are doing to stay on top and consistently close sales.

Small Concessions lead to Large Concessions
Small concessions on small issues enable you to ask for large concessions on large issues. One of the very best negotiating strategies is to be willing to give something in order to get something. When you make every effort to appear reasonable by conceding on issues that are unimportant to you, you put yourself in an excellent position to request an equal or greater concession later.

Use Reciprocity to your Advantage
Use the reciprocity principle to your advantage. Before negotiating make a list of the things the other party might want and decide upon what concessions you are willing to give to get what you want. This preparation strengthens your negotiating ability considerably.

Action Exercise
Prepare your best price or offer before you begin. Then, think through your first “fallback” position and how far you are willing to go to make a deal. Prepare your final fallback position as well, along with the maximum you are willing to concede. This exercise of thinking through these issues in advance will make you a much better negotiator.

Soul Date! – A Review of Our Life Path

Establishing Our Life’s Goals by Michael Barrett

Life is a journey and we have the power to create our own reality, our own destiny by the choices we make. The choices we made prior to now and the choices we make today will determine our future. Choosing carefully and decisively will result in dramatic transformations in our life. Have you ever considered how powerful you really are? Sometimes it may take adversity, personal exhaustion or even a tragic moment or loss of a love one to open ourselves to new and exciting possibilities. These breakthroughs can be life changing and can be seen as ‘Life Path Moments’

Feeling the effects and frustration of being financially broke can also give rise to one of these Life Path Moments and may dispose us to STOP wishing for a different circumstance. But to then take the necessary actions to change the outcome so we don’t find ourselves in the same place a year or ten years from now. Many of us are familiar with the definition of insanity: that is, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Unfortunately, many people live their lives doing the same things over and over again hoping for change or a different result.

To live a life of intentionality and not a life by default, you need to work on your own dreams by setting goals. A very good way to do this is to make a date with your soul. Go to a location or a setting that would be conducive for personal reflection, a place where you can get away from the many distractions that life has to offer. In setting you apart from the all-to-familiar to make a date with your soul will make for a powerful moment in your life, in fact a real awakening to the world of possibilities.

Awakenings can revolutionize our life and provide instantaneous clarity and vision. These new realities occur like something that was never there. An awakening is a defining moment for us, a moment of real truth. I once met a person who was always up and very positive. She appeared to be on top of her game. When asked if she had always been so positive, she profoundly replied that “when you give life your best, life gives you its best in return.” Sounds like the Attitude of Gratitude.

In order to really do this, we need to align our self with our ultimate source. For some of us that is God, our higher power all in way of good spiritual economics. You were not born to be limited but have been endowed with the very same stuff that great people who always win are made of. All yaou need to do to realize this great potential and awaken sleeping giant within us is to simply KNOW, not visualize or meditate on this fact, but KNOW that you are in the same category as the greatest people who have ever lived, those who you perceive as winners. After all, in heavens eyes there are no losers. You were born to win and to live your life with no limiting beliefs.

Setting Your Goals:

When you make a date with your soul, you will want to sit down and write out your goals. Unfortunately, only about 14% of the worlds’ population actually set goals and write them down. When you set your goals, you should do it in the PRESENT TENSE as if to say you already have attained them. You list should read something like the following. These are my goals, but you can do the same with yours. Do not, I repeat, do not simply visualize having these things some time in the future. KNOW that you have these things RIGHT NOW. This is one of the underlying keys that make successful people Successful. We call this the Be, Do and Have exercise. Chances are you are already doing some of this without realizing it. In doing this exercise several times a day you will want to Think Big with ‘No Limiting Beliefs.’

 I have a digital camera

 I own a laptop

 I have a great wardrobe

 My books and CDs are selling vigorously

 I am caught up on my taxes

 I have a steady source of revenue and have no debt

 I am flying around the world in first class

 I have provided my mother with her own accessible dream house with a live in care giver

 I received a check for 150k to engage in numerous speaking events for a major publisher

 I have my own home on the beech in San Diego

 I own a luxury vehicle with driver

Once you have committed these goals to writing, you should review them every day, and if possible, twice a day. Place them on your mirror, so when you look at your reflection, you will see yourself as one who is endowed with all that it takes to achieve greatness and generosity. You would to do well to recite them out loud. Experience the Power of YOU. This is how we effectively create our reality and our destiny.

You need to go within. As the saying goes, ‘if you don’t go ‘within’ you will go ‘without.’ You will want to have and be possessed with a vision for your life. When you get on the right path, a certain magic happens and becomes very real. These are special moments in our life that are moments of elevations or spirit shifts. You know: Shifts Happen! When we take the time to address what’s happening inside, reality conforms to what is happening within. We are spiritually connected to that same source that gave birth to creation, makes babies and enables us to co-create and create our own reality, our ‘destiny’ in harmony with our God, our source and others. A certain guiding life principal suggests that it is also very important to be aware that when we engage in any activity, or make plans to do so, it should only be pursued if it is for the good of all, and not just for our self.

Your dreams and goals are your North Star that will guide you on the journey of your life path. You possess the divine right to dream and have whatever you want. We are invited to create and co-create all things with the energy of ‘thoughts,’ ‘feelings’ and ‘actions.’ The world of energy is based on these three principles. From these principles comes a deeper awareness of complete abundance, prosperity, total freedom and unlimited beliefs that allows us to bring our authenticity to fruition. Abundance and Well Being Is the Natural State of Our Universe. And that Love, Harmony and Prosperity is the birth right of every human being living on our planet. When we align our self with our true source, our creator, we will discover our true purpose and give back to the community. The Good Book reminds us that: “In giving, we shall receive.”
